Thoughts on Absorb

みなさん、お久しぶりです！

Hello everyone!

今回「Absorb」（吸う）という作品を描きました！進行中のプロジェクトである「Familiar Feelings」に追加されています。

This time I drew "Absorb". This has been added to one of my on-going projects "Familiar Feelings".

先日、イースター休暇を使って１０日間ほどカンボジアに行ってきました（そのトラベルダイアリーは別記事で書きます）。日本以外のアジアの国を訪れるのは日本の大学の卒業旅行で行った台湾ぶりでした。

The other day I travelled to Cambodia with my partner for 10 days using Easter holiday (I will write a separate post for travel diary kind of thing!). It was the first time to visit an Asian country apart from Japan since when I went to Taiwan as my graduation trip.

滞在中は、１秒も無駄にしまい、ということで予定を詰めまくって１０日間でしたが多くの場所を訪れることができました。いろんな寺院に行ったんですが、印象に残っているのは至る所に伸びまくる根っこ。重そうな石が積み重なった寺院を食い尽くそうとしている根っこからは自然のちからの大きさが感じられる。建てるのに３０〜４０年かかったという石でできた立派な寺院も自然の前ではその姿を留めることができません。

During my 10-day stay, we didn't want to waste any seconds so we visited a lot of places. We visited different temples but what inspired me most was the roots growing everywhere. The roots were almost eating up the temples made of heavy stones, from which I felt how powerful the nature is. Even the temples which took people 30 to 40 years to build cannot stay the same due to the nature.

寺院見学中に、ある木に目が留まりました。それは大きくて立派な白い木。表面は斑点のようになっていて、スムース。よくみると、とても美しい。

I noticed a tree when I was in a temple. It was a big white tree. The patterned surface was smooth. When you look at it closely, it's even more beautiful.

私は木についての知識がないので何の木なのかはわかりませんが。緑の濃い森林ではその白い表面が目立つ。

I don't have knowledge about trees so I'm not sure what type of tree it was. But the white colour stands out in the deep green of the forest.

この白い木に違う種類の根っこや木が絡まっていることが多い。茶色の別の木の根っこをまとったその木に見入ってしまいました。

There were roots and ivies clinging around the white trees. I couldn't take my eyes off from a white tree with brown roots.

白い木は比較的水分を多く含むので、茶色の木がその水分を吸い取ってるんだそう。それと同時に、傾きかけた白い木がくねくねした茶色の木を支えにして立っているようにも見えました。

Our driver told me that as the white trees relatively have large amount of water, the brown tree/roots are absorbing it clinging on the surface. But to me, it also looked like the white tree is leaning on the winding brown tree.

今は両者がバランスを保っていて立っていられるけれど、いつかどちらかが相手の生命を吸い尽くしてしまうのか。お互いに吸い尽くしてしまうのか。もしくはこのままバランスを保って生きていくのか。そんな自然の世界の依存関係を、身近なことに置き換えて考えてみました。

Now both of them can stand keeping the balance, but is either of them going to absorb all the energy of another one? Both of them are suck the energy up? Or will they keep the balance forever? Then I also tried to translate this to things around me in the human world.

安心感の中にじっとしている間も、その一瞬だけではわからなくても、根っこは絶え間なく伸び続けて、いつの間にか埋もれて身動きが取れなくなってしまうかもしれない。そして力尽きるかもしれない。

Even though you don't see it at a glance, even when you stay still in relief, the roots are continuously growing and they eventually cover you up then you won't be able to move. Then your energy will become 0.

そんなことを考えながら「Absorb」を描きました。

Having thoughts like that, I drew "Absorb".
